Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated television series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. It follows the adventures of Aang and his friends in a world where all the nations are connected by a magical globe called the World Tree. Aang must master all four elements and their Wisps in order to put an end to Fire Lord Ozai's reign of terror over the world. The show was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, both brainchilds of Nickelodeon who had aimed for it to be released as one movie before ending up with a full season order after it took off during its premiere week. The series first aired on February 21, 2005, to almost 6.5 million viewers. The finale of the first season, "Sozin's Comet", was aired on July 19, 2005. The show won an Emmy Award in 2006 for its original score by Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn. It was produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio. The show is set in a universe where some are born with the ability to "bend" one of the four elements: Water, Earth, Fire or Air. The term "bending" refers to the use of one of these elements for fighting or otherwise moving objects or people by focusing through martial arts-like movements. The series' central conflict revolves around Fire Lord Zuko's quest to conquer the world, which he does in the final episodes of the show. His older half-brother, Prince Ozai, is a notorious firebending tyrant from their mother's clan who seeks to rule over everyone. Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang and his friends as they seek out three elemental rings in order to restore balance after a comet falls from the sky and severs four nations from each other. The series has a large cast of supporting characters, many of whom have appeared in multiple episodes. Many characters have been well received by fans and critics alike. The series was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who both had previously worked on the animated series "Samurai Jack" and were aiming to release it as a full-length feature before adding a season or two of content and ending up with a full season order for the show. They had originally intended the series to be set in present-day Earth, with Aang having to learn magic and martial arts in order to defeat an evil wizard who was destroying his universe; however, they changed the idea when they felt that people would not accept such an abrupt change. Zuko's character design was inspired by The Last Samurai for Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series was first announced at a Comic-Con presentation on July 21, 2004. At the same presentation, the creators also revealed a trailer for an animated series called "The Legend of Aang". After being selected by Nickelodeon as its first original animated programming (O.A.P.) project, the series' production started in February 2005 and ended in 2007. cfa1e77820
